Say #8220;NO#8221; to Your Boss in 4 Steps

Say 8220NO8221 to Yur Boss in 4 Steps Say 8220NO8221 to Your Boss in 4 Steps When it comes to a higher authority level, we wouldnt think of saying no. Sure, that extra project means Ill have to stay twice as late at work this week and cancel other things I had planned, but no isnt an option. I had a family trip planned this upcoming weekend, but since you really need me in the office now I will have to reschedule it because I cannot imagine saying no to the one in charge.Theres a certain level of fear we exude to those above our pay grades because, ultimately, they have the power to affect our jobs (or whether we remain employed at all). Yet, there are certain times when saying no to a boss, manager or supervisor is not only the right thing to do, but the best thing to do. These scenarios include when youre asked to doAnything illegal, unethical or could cause harm to yourself, co-workers or the companyTerminate someones position when this isnt your dutyLie, cheat or steal from the company or othersYour managers or other peoples workConstant personal errands for your bossAlthough you dont want to make a habit of saying no to your superiors, you also want to ensure you arent being taken advantage of. Below are four steps to take when the time comes to say no to your boss.Think about your reason(s) for saying no. You cannot say no to a requested task simply because you dont feel like doing it. Many people dont feel like waking up early, driving to work, staying eight plus hours and doing the same thing the next day, but they do it because they have to. Your reasoning should be justifiable. If your bosss request made you feel uncomfortable or immediately produced questions for you, try to figure out why before saying no. Evaluating your reasoning will help provide justification once you do refuse his or her request.Weigh the pros and cons of saying yes and saying no. Write out all the consequences that could follow if you complete the task and all the consequenc es you could face if you do not. What are the advantages and disadvantages? How will doing or not doing the task affect you in the future? Also, think about how you will feel if your boss asks you to do the same thing again and if youre willing to suffer the yes-or-no consequences once again.Prepare your response beforehand. Research (if possible) evidence that helps support your refusal of the task. For example, the employee handbook or company mission statement. Choose your words carefully and practice what you will say and how you will say it with a family member or friend. Be prepared to follow up your answer if your boss becomes persistent or tries to threaten or force you into the task. The important thing is to exude confidence and show your boss you thoroughly thought about your no answer and are committed to it.Offer alternative options. Perhaps you know of someone else who would be a better fit for the task, or maybe you can complete the task at a later date. Provide a few alternatives and/or try to come to a compromise unless you flat out do not desire to do what youve been asked to. Alternatives and compromise ease the sting of a full no, to a not right now.

Media Job Titles, Descriptions, and Career Options

Media Job Titles, Descriptions, and Career OptionsMedia Job Titles, Descriptions, and Career OptionsYoumight think of the media as simply another word for TV (or TV and radio) journalism. Thats often what people mean when they say it. But theres more to media than being a news anchor. Media is actually the plural form of the word medium, and it refers to anything that conducts anything else, usually information. Television is a medium, as is radio, newspapers, movies, and the internet, among others. If you have a job in the media, that means you could be doing anything in any of these fields. Media jobs include everything from localnews anchorsto Hollywood film directors. What they all have in common is that they help communicate something to the public. There are many different options available if youre interested in a media career. You can use this discussion of job titles in order to explore all the wonderful variety of work the media sector has to offer, or you may find a title intriguing enough to want it for your own. That being said, this discussion can only scratch the surface by touching on some of the major aspects of a very large field. Types of Media Jobs There are so many different media jobs that someone can be an expert in one and not know another even exists. Individuals often stay within one medium, beginning as a movie actor or a camera operator and eventually becoming a director, for example. But it is also common to move between media in similar positions. For example, a newspaper columnist might branch out by writing a book, and then write and host a television program, or a radio producer might also produce podcasts. JournalismJournalism refers to any form of news, in any medium, whether print, online, on television or radio, or in documentary film-making. Journalists discover things and then they tell the world. Positions in journalism include news anchors, sports announcers, news correspondents, newspaper columnists, investigative r eporters, and science writers. Other schriftarts of jobs, such as video editors or print production planners, are also critical to journalism, but are not unique to it. AnnouncerBroadcast nachrichten AnalystBroadcast and Sound Engineering TechnicianBroadcasterJournalistNews AnalystReporterTelevision Announcer Writing and EditingWriters are obviously important in print and online media, but movies, TV, and radio content is also usually written before it is performed and recorded. Each of those writers typically has an editor whose job it is to ensure that the text meets the standards set by the publication or program leadership. Video and audio editing, in contrast, are more about organizing segments of recorded material sequentially, into clear and cohesive end products. There is also another type of editor whose responsibility is not for the individual document but rather for the publication as a whole. These include managing editors, acquisition editors, and features editors, and their duties are largely administrative. Heres information onwriting and editing jobs. This includes radio stories, podcasts, a TV episode, or a movie. In a large production, such as a movie, the producer might be coordinating the activities of hundreds, or even thousands, of people. The producer of a five-minute radio spot might be the only person on the project. There are other positions with related duties on projects large enough to have leadership teams, like the floor manager and production coordinator. What Employers Need to Know About Generation Z

What Employers Need to Know About in richtungeration ZWhat Employers Need to Know About Generation ZYou hear a lot about Millennials, but do you know who else is starting to hit the workforce? Generation Z.At over two billion people, Generation Z is the largest generational cohort of all time. They will rock your world- if not already- then very shortly. How can you use Gen Zs strengths while providing them with work that has meaning- a necessity to this new cohort of workers. Generation Z members were born starting in the mid-1990s. (Additional names suggested for this cohort include Post Millennials, Homeland Generation, Centennials, iGeneration, Gen Tech, Gen Wii, Net Gen, Digital Natives, and Plurals.) So far, Gen Z is winning the notoriety contest. The oldest members of Gen Z are just finishing up college. A few have graduated, and more are currently enrolled, and doing internships. They are just hitting the workforce, and a lot of them are currently doing their first summer inte rnship. How does this generation differ from preceding generations and what do they think about the workplace?LendEDU, a student loan corporation, surveyed interns- who are mostly Gen Z and found interesting information. Even in the Internet Age, Connections Are About Networking You might think that Gen Z found their internships by researching companies on the internet and applying directly- and a little more than 30 percent did. But, 43 percentfound their internships through family connections. This means that even as the internet has made contacts, ideas and information more accessible to everyone, who you know is totenstill more important than what you can Google. And who you are related to really makes a difference. Gen Z understands that its real life connections that make the big difference when it comes to finding an internship. 91 percent of the Gen Z cohort feel thatconnections outweigh grades when it comes to landing a job. That could mean that studying and actual lear ning isnt what they are focused on if they already have family and friend connections. It could also mean that people who dont have good connections may feel that they dont have much hope of finding a great internship. leid Everyone Gets an Internship Thirty-four percent of college seniors have had two or more internships, and 26 percent have had one internship, but that means 40 percent of seniors havent had a single internship. While internships arent required for graduation at most universities, they are extremely helpful for finding that first job. Without an internship, theres nothing to distinguish one student from another except for a grade point average. A student without an internship hasnt proven himself in any way other than in the classroom. Other jobs, of course, can provide evidence of surviving in a work environment, but retail and restaurants provide a different (albeit valuable) experience than a professional internship can provide. Gen Z thinks that connections are the way to find internships. So, its possible that some of these students who have not had any internships didnt apply for internships because they believed that they could only get one through family connections. Remember that 90 percent of Gen Z members surveyed believe connections are the most important factor- 60 percent of people found their internships through either applying online, help from their career counseling center or through extra-curricular activities. Internships arent limited to those with connections, even though connections certainly help. Its Not About the Money When faced with the choice between an internship that would open a lot of doors or one that pays better, Gen Z preferred to look at the long-term, and 93 percent opted for the one that would open doors, rather than the one attached to a bigger paycheck. Money is important, and many internships in tech and big business do offer pay and they pay quite well, but an internship is about gaining expe rience. Legally, unless the internship meets very strict guidelines, it is illegal not to pay interns if a company is for profit. That doesnt mean, however, that unpaid internships in the for-profit world dont exist. They do, largely because students are willing to work as interns for the experience and business owners dont understand the laws regarding interns. Those members of Gen Z who chase the internships are doing it for the experience, which also means there may be pressure on those who do not have internships to work for higher pay to support themselves. The students who believe that internships only come through connections and believe that its only about experience, may not seek an internship if it cant provide a big paycheck. What Is Generation Z Doing With Downtime? An internship, like almost all jobs, can have boring moments and some downtime. What do Generation Z interns do with that downtime? Well, the results probably wont surprise you 43% look at random websites .19% watch Netflix18% shop online20% do something else Clearly, this is a well-wired generation- or rather a wifi generation. As of 2015, 86% of college students owned a smartphone. So, you dont even have to give your intern a computer for them to find a way to waste time on the internet. What Does This Mean for Business Owners? If youre a manager or an owner and you want to help out a college student by providing an internship, what can you learn from this? The most important take away is that there are tons of college students out there who have not done an internship, even though they are in their senior year. You probably do not have to offer a high paycheck to attract an intern, as long as you provide meaningful work experiences. You may want to consider who you hire as interns- are you only looking at friends and relatives of your current employees? If not, are you giving preference to those people? If so, why? Lots of companies talk about increasing their diversity, but h iring interns out of the limited pool of friends and family of your current employees often excludes first-generation college students. If youre the first person in your family to go to college, you are less likely to have a parent or other relative in a white-collar job who can vouch for you. Consider placing more of an emphasis on online and career counseling center recruiting. You will find great candidates you would otherwise have overlooked- and youre giving a student an opportunity they wouldnt have had otherwise. If you find that your interns are spending too much time on their phones, you have a couple of options tell them to put it away, or keep them so busy that they have no time for goofing off. Because generation Z reports that they want internships for experience, theyll appreciate additional work responsibilities and challenges that can go on their resumes. Dont Complain About Generation Z The newest members of your workforce are (of course) the youngest members. E very new generation comes with the old fogies saying, When I was their age... The reality is that there are differences between a generation that was raised with an iPhone in their hand and a generation that rode in station wagons without seat belts. But, the biggest difference is simply age and a lack of experience. What you may blame on a generation is really the product of being new to the workforce. Give them a break and hire an intern or two. You may decide to keep them.

They are easy to digest and can be kept low-calorie. They can be added to your morning smoothies or porridge bowl, and can also added to savory foods. Wed recommend Natures Plus Almond Protein Powder (40.50, www.naturesplus.co.uk ).Healthy habit Skipping the sugar in your tea/coffeeBoost it Culling the sugar from your ba kingCutting sugar out of your cup of tea or coffee can significantly lower your daily intake. To boost this healthy habit even more, try cutting out the sugar from your sweet treats and snacks, too.In a nutshell refined sugar provides empty calories and has no nutritional value whatsoeverIf you are making cakes, think of ways other than sugar to add sweetness. For example, you could add carrots, raisins, dates, figs or bananas as natural sweeteners. Many people now make wonderful cakes from naturally sweet vegetables such as beetroot and carrot. For apple pies or crumbles use eating apples instead of cooking apples so you do not need to add sugar you could always add raisins or sultanas to make a pie or crumble that little bit sweeter. Unsweetened date slice is wonderful because dates are naturally sweet.Other natural alternatives include maple syrup, barley malt syrup, brown rice syrup and stevia.Healthy habit Eating your 5 a dayBoost it Switch to wholegrain staplesSwap your regular white bread, pasta and rice for brown and wholegrain alternatives to give your health an extra boost.Swap to whole grain alternatives that release energy slowly. The carbohydrates in whole meal bread are broken down slowly over several hours and so do notgive any sudden flooding of sugars into the bloodstream. Also, this gradual release helps you to feel full for longer, suppressing your appetite and stopping you craving sweet foods because you are not on the blood sugar rollercoaster.Healthy habit Getting your 7-8 hours of shut eyeBoost it Add a magnesium supplementKnown as natures tranquiliser, adding a magnesium supplement to your diet not only helps to assist in better sleeping patterns, but it also helps to relax your muscles and support your metabolism and energy levels.A magnesium supplement may be beneficial for long-term support for your metabolism, especially if you lead a stressful lifestyle or have trouble sleeping. Magnesium is vital for energy metabolism and may be esp ecially supportive for relaxation and sleep, too.Healthy habit Eating your lunch away from your deskBoost it Walk to workWe all know its important to step away from your desk during your lunch hour, but how about taking it a step further by increasing your daily steps. Whether you walk from home to work, or get off the tube a couple of stops earlier to walk the rest of the way, this helps to get your muscles moving, blood circulating and your heart rate pumping. Walk whenever you can, every day and walk briskly. Everywhere you go and in everything you do, try to consider how you can maximize the walking element. This post was originally published on YourCoffeeBreak.co.uk.

Job Seekers How to Pitch Your Skills to Make a Career Change

Job Seekers How to Pitch Yur Skills to Make a Career ChangeJob Seekers How to Pitch Your Skills to Make a Career ChangeFind new career opportunities by searching outside your current field. When it comes to the job search, not all fields are created equally. In a recent study, Ladders found that, depending on the city, one job seekers desert can be anothers oasis. For example, healthcare workers in Boston currently enjoy a favorable job market, whereas those in real estate in the same city are more likely to struggle during the job hunt. For those in the desert, a career transition may be in order so your skills can be put to use in a more favorable field. While many people have considered or even yearned to change fields, this is easier said than done.Follow these three steps when making a career change.Know Your StrengthsTake stock of your core strengths and interests. What are you great at and passionate about? What type of working environments do you thrive in? If you keep a brag s heet, nows the time to take it out. Looking over your past accomplishments, which skill sets played a key role in your successes? Consider the feedback youve received from colleagues, managers, vendors and clients that highlight your core competencies. Boil down your elevator pitch to capture these strengths without using any industry-specific jargon that wouldnt make sense to someone outside your current line of work.Find Where You FitWe often refer to transferrable skills when talking about changing careers. Its important to identify which of your skill sets are valuable to another field, and in what capacity. I can rattle off a list of common skills that are easily transferrable to a variety industries and functions problem-solving, strategic thinking, strong written or oral communication, people management, innovation, negotiation, etc. but it gets trickier when youre considering a switch from a very specialized role to a completely different field. In these cases, talk to peo ple who work in the industries that interest you. Once they have a good understanding of your background and strengths, theyll be able provide insight into which roles in their field might be relevant to you.Real-life example You may think the online dating and job-search industries have nothing in common. However, after having this type of conversation you would find that both operate under subscription-based models and match two entities together. In fact, here at Ladders weve hired many people from the online dating industry to work on our product and marketing teams. Additionally, weve seen former recruiters become top-notch B2B sales representatives for our enterprise business.Repackage Your ExperienceEvery industry has its own acronyms and terminology its your job to figure out how to translate your experience and past successes into terms that resonate with your new target audience. Subscribe to industry-specific publications, conduct informational interviews, and start atte nding events that are relevant to your target field to gain this insight and update your resume and elevator pitch accordingly.Focus on highlighting your ability to deliver results. In your resume, downplay the industry of your former positions and play up other aspects of the companies (revenue, number of people, ranking, etc.) that are similar to those youre now targeting. When interviewing and networking, bring to light both your genuine interest and passion for your newfound field, as well as the steps youve taken to learn more about it and fill in your skill gaps.Real-life example Say you work in account management for an automotive rental company. Instead of stating in your resume or an interview that you manage a book of 40 clients with a fleet potential of over 1500 vehicles, totaling more than $400 1000000, you might instead say that your book of business consists of 40 clients, totaling more than $400 million in asset management. The second statement is universally underst ood by salespeople in any industry.By conducting research on your strengths and how they fit into the field of your choice, transitioning into a new career can be just as attainable as finding a great role in your current field.

Tim Cook to Dukes Class of 2018 Find your fearlessness

Tim Cook to Duke's Class of 2018 'Find your fearlessness' Tim Cook to Duke's Class of 2018 'Find your fearlessness' Below is the transcript (and video) of Tim Cook’s commencement speech to Duke’s Class of 2018:Hello, Blue Devils! It’s great to be back. It’s an honor to stand before you - both as your commencement speaker and a fellow Duke graduate.I earned my degree from the Fuqua School in 1988. In preparing for this speech, I reached out to one of my favorite professors from back then. Bob Reinheimer taught a great course in Management Communications, which included sharpening your public speaking skills. We hadn’t spoken for decades, so I was thrilled when he told me: he remembered a particularly gifted public speaker who took his class in the 1980s …With a bright mind and a charming personality! He said he knew - way back then - this person was destined for greatness. You can imagine how this made me feel. Professor Reinheimer had an eye for talent. And, if I do say so, I think his instincts were right …Melinda Gates has really made her mark on the world.I’m grateful to Bob, Dea n Boulding, and all of my Duke professors. Their teachings have stayed with me throughout my career.I want to thank President Price, the Duke Faculty, and my fellow members of the Board of Trustees for the honor of speaking with you today. I’d also like to recognize this year’s honorary degree recipients. And most of all, congratulations to the class of 2018!No graduate gets to this moment alone. I want to acknowledge your parents, grandparents and friends here cheering you on, just as they have every step of the way. Let’s give them our thanks. It’s  commencement season!Follow Ladders’  Commencement Addresses magazine on Flipboard  to watch and read all of the most inspiring speeches from this year and years past.Today especially, I remember my mother, who watched me graduate from Duke. I wouldn’t have been there that day - or made it here today - without her support.Let’s give our special thanks to all the mothers here today, on Mother’s Day.I have wonderful memori es here. Studying - and not studying - with people I still count as friends to this day. Cheering at Cameron for every victory.Cheering even louder when that victory is over Carolina.Look back over your shoulder fondly and say goodbye to act one of your life. And then quickly look forward. Act two begins today. It’s your turn to reach out and take the baton. You enter the world at a time of great challenge. Our country is deeply divided - and too many Americans refuse to hear any opinion that differs from their own.Our planet is warming with devastating consequences - and there are some who deny it’s even happening. Our schools and communities suffer from deep inequality - we fail to guarantee every student the right to a good education. And yet we are not powerless in the face of these problems. You are not powerless to fix them.No generation has ever held more power than yours. And no generation has been able to make change happen faster than yours can. The pace at which prog ress is possible has accelerated dramatically. Aided by technology, every individual has the tools, potential, and reach to build a better world. That makes this the best time in history to be alive.Whatever you choose to do with your life. Wherever your passion takes you.I urge you to take the power you have been given and use it for good. Aspire to leave this world better than you found it.I didn’t always see life as clearly as I do now. But I’ve learned the greatest challenge of life is knowing when to break with conventional wisdom.Don’t just accept the world you inherit today. Don’t just accept the status quo.No big challenge has ever been solved, and no lasting improvement has ever been achieved unless people dare to try something different. Dare to think different.I was lucky to learn from someone who believed this deeply. Someone who knew that changing the world starts with “following a vision, not a path.” He was my friend and mentor, Steve Jobs.Steve’s vision was that great ideas come from a restless refusal to accept things as they are. And those principles still guide us at Apple today. We reject the notion that global warming is inevitable. That’s why we run Apple on 100% renewable energy. We reject the excuse that getting the most out of technology means trading away your right to privacy. So we choose a different path: Collecting as little of your data as possible. Being thoughtful and respectful when it’s in our care. Because we know it belongs to you.In every way, at every turn, the question we ask ourselves is not ‘what can we do’ but ‘what should we do.’Because Steve taught us that’s how change happens. And from him, I learned to never be content with things as they are.I believe this mindset comes naturally to young people … and you should never let go of that restlessness. So today’s ceremony isn’t just about presenting you with a degree, it’s about presenting you with a question. How will you challenge the st atus quo? How will you push the world forward?Fifty years ago today - May 13th, 1968 - Robert Kennedy was campaigning in Nebraska, and spoke to a group of students who were wrestling with that same question. Those were troubled times, too. The U.S. was at war in Vietnam. There was violent unrest in America’s cities. And the country was still reeling from the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King a month earlier.Kennedy gave the students a call to action. When you look across this country, and when you see peoples’ lives held back by discrimination and poverty… when you see injustice and inequality. He said, you should be the last people to accept things as they are.Let Kennedy’s words echo here today.“You should be the last people to accept [it].”Whatever path you’ve chosen.  Be it medicine, business, engineering, the humanities - whatever drives your passion. Be the last to accept the notion that the world you inherit cannot be improved.Be the last to accept the e xcuse that says, “that’s just how things are done here.” Duke graduates, you should be the last people to accept it. And you should be the first to change it.The world-class education you’ve received - that you’ve worked so hard forgives you opportunities that few people have. You are uniquely qualified, and therefore uniquely responsible, to build a better way forward. That won’t be easy. It will require great courage. But that courage will not only help you live your life to the fullest - it will empower you to transform the lives of others.Last month I was in Birmingham to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination. And I had the incredible privilege of spending time with women and men who marched and worked alongside him. Many of them were younger at the time than you are now. They told me that when they defied their parents and joined the sit-ins and boycotts when they faced the police dogs and fire hoses, they were risking everything they had - bec oming foot soldiers for justice without a second thought.Because they knew that change had to come. Because they believed so deeply in the cause of justice. Because they knew, even with all the adversity they had faced, they had the chance to build something better for the next generation. We can all learn from their example. If you hope to change the world, you must find your fearlessness. Now, if you’re anything like I was on graduation day, maybe you’re not feeling so fearless.Maybe you’re thinking about the job you hope to get, or wondering where you’re going to live, or how to repay that student loan. These, I know, are real concerns. I had them, too. But don’t let those worries stop you from making a difference.Fearlessness means taking the first step, even if you don’t know where it will take you. It means being driven by a higher purpose, rather than by applause. It means knowing that you reveal your character when you stand apart, more than when you stand with the crowd. If you step up, without fear of failure … if you talk and listen to each other, without fear of rejection … if you act with decency and kindness, even when no one is looking, even if it seems small or inconsequential, trust me, the rest will fall into place.More importantly, you’ll be able to tackle the big things when they come your way. It’s in those truly trying moments that the fearless inspire us.Fearless like the students of Parkland, Florida - who refuse to be silent about the epidemic of gun violence, and have rallied millions to their cause.Fearless like the women who say “me, too” and “time’s up” … women who cast light into dark places, and move us toward a more just and equal future.Fearless like those who fight for the rights of immigrants … who understand that our only hopeful future is one that embraces all who want to contribute.Duke graduates, be fearless.Be the last people to accept things as they are, and the first people to stand up an d change them for the better. In 1964, Martin Luther King, Jr. gave a speech at Page Auditorium to an overflow crowd. Students who couldn’t get a seat listened from outside on the lawn. Dr. King warned them that someday we would all have to atone, not only for the words and actions of the bad people, but for “the appalling silence and indifference of the good people, who sit around and say, ‘Wait on time.’ ”Martin Luther King stood right here at Duke, and said: “The time is always right to do right.” For you, graduates, that time is now. It will always be now. It’s time to add your brick to the path of progress. It’s time for all of us to move forward. And it’s time for you to lead the way.Thank you - and congratulations, Class of 2018!

Amazons Mechanical Turk (MTurk) Crowdsourced Marketplace

Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk) Crowdsourced Marketplace Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk) Crowdsourced Marketplace One of the earliest and best-known crowdsourcing marketplaces, Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, also called MTurk, utilizes what it calls the “human intelligence” of an army of independent contractors who complete small online tasks. All of these online jobs are things that Amazons “requesters” (referred to as clients) need real people, not computers, to do. This work-at-home division of Amazon is part of Amazon’s Web Services division and is separate from the online juggernaut’s home call center employees- which you can learn more about by exploring a profile of Amazon. Types of Work-at-Home Opportunities Online workers at Mechanical Turk accept human intelligence tasks (HITs) and are paid small sums for each task. Though Amazon is a U.S.-based company, workers and requesters are based all over the globe. (You can also discover more about WAH jobs hiring globally.) Because of its global diversity, what HITs pay and what they require can vary greatly. Some jobs might pay 1 or 2 cents but take only minutes to complete and require very little expertise on the workers part. Other HITs mandate that workers gain qualifications before being allowed to work on the jobs. Meeting qualification standards may come in the form of a potential worker taking a test but could also simply be a worker being approved or rejected based simply on their previous work, location, profile, and so on. Jobs requiring certain qualifications usually pay more. The types of tasks might include: SurveysBlog commentsTranscriptionShort editing and writing jobsKeyword searchesPhoto captioning and tagging How Mechanical Turk Works To begin working for Mechanical Turk, go to the Mechanical Turk website and simply choose to accept a HIT. The site will then prompt you to sign into your Amazon.com account or to create one. In taking this step, you agree to the Mechanical Turk privacy notice. You can then browse HITs and begin looking for jobs that interest you. Next, you can examine the “Reward” field to see what a task pays. The “Time Allotted” field tells you how long you have to finish the task before it is considered abandoned and is assigned to someone else. This is not necessarily how long it will take. Many HITs give an estimated time for completion, which youll find in the full description, but not all tasks provide an estimated time. Then you simply click on the name of the HIT that piques your interest for a very brief description and click on “View a HIT in this group” to see a full description. On this screen,? you can choose to accept a HIT or you can skip it and look at other HITs from the same requester.? You can also search HITs by keyword or sort them by reward amount or qualifications required. Two Examples of Typical Work A recent Mechanical Turk listing offered workers 80 cents to read a restaurant review and then answer a survey about their impressions. This task had a set time limit, which was 45 minutes. Another listed task asked workers to fill out a 15-minute psychological questionnaire about what motivates people to do certain tasks. This particular task paid $1 and noted that the job could take up to three hours. As you can see, the diversity on the site is vast, and the best way to find the right tasks is to invest unpaid time perusing the site to see what works best for you. Pay The pay-for-task work varies greatly. You can get paid $4 to $5 an hour simply for filling out personality questionnaires and answering surveys, or get paid as little as $0.01. Because of the discrepancy in pay, and because only 4 percent of workers earn more than $7.25 an hour, the median hourly wage is really about $2 an hour. Because Amazons Mechanical Turk  workers are independent contractors, not employees, they are not guaranteed the minimum wage. Payment After accepting a HIT, the requester is paid via an Amazon Payments account. However, it may take a few hours to a few days for a HIT to be approved once completed. For U.S.-based workers, money can then be transferred to a U.S. bank account. Workers in India can elect to receive a check in Indian rupees. For all workers not based in the U.S. or India, earnings can be transferred to an Amazon gift card. All workers are required to submit tax information. U.S.-based workers need to submit a tax ID or Social Security number. Non-U.S. citizens living outside the United States also need to submit an IRS tax form. U.S. citizens living outside the United States may not work for Mechanical Turk. Pros and Cons The benefits and drawbacks of Mechanical Turk can be summarized as follows: Pros: Largely not difficult tasks.Someone with a high school education can easily complete most tasks.Once just one-off jobs for peple in a down economy, many workers rely on Mechanical Turk for the bulk of their income. Its sometimes the only option for work in depressed areas. Its a good stop-gap if you have a big outlay approaching- just spend more time at the computer. You can choose to get paid every day, instead of every two weeks. Cons: The work is largely unregulated. On balance, the work pays terribly. The tasks that pay the best and are the least time-consuming get snapped up quickly; you need to be glued to your computer to nab the best jobs.A 20-minute task may need one hour to complete. If you criticize Amazon online, you could have your account suspended. You may have to send a task back because the requester did not provide clear directions- and you dont get paid for that.Workers pay Amazon 20 percent of the requesters listed fee. Unlike some other micro job sites, which may offer real-world as well as online tasks, Mechanical Turk is 100 percent online.

Max Out Your HSA Contributions

Max Out Your HSA Contributions Max Out Your HSA Contributions Financial planners know something you may not- when you max out your HSA, some powerful tax advantages follow. Did you know that your health savings account can be a significant part of your retirement nest egg? What Is an HSA? A health savings account- or HSA- is an account specifically for paying healthcare costs. Because of the tax advantages that come with your HSA, contributing to and using the account to pay for qualified medical expenses gives you a significant discount on your healthcare costs. Do I Qualify? Not everybody qualifies for an HSA. The main qualification is that you must be covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). As the name implies, HDHPs require you to pay a significant portion of your healthcare costs upfront before insurance kicks in. To qualify for an HSA the plan must require you to pay at least the first $1,350 ($2,700 for family plans) and a maximum of $6,650. ($13,300 for families). Warning: To qualify for an HSA, you have to pay the above amounts before insurance pays anything. That means you’re responsible for the insurance-adjusted costs of doctor visits. If they charge the insurance company $150 for a visit, you have to pay it until you pay your deductible. But remember, you can use your HSA balance to pay those costs. If you can afford to shoulder those portions of your medical care upfront, HDHPs often cost less than other health insurance plans and probably qualify for an HSA. Are You in Good Health? The main purpose of your HSA is for paying for medical care but if you use your entire balance each year, you can’t take advantage of the benefits that come from holding a balance long-term. For that reason, don’t think of your health savings account as an investment vehicle if you deplete the balance each year. Why Max Out Your HSA? The tax benefits are so good that some financial planners say to max out your HSA before contributing to an IRA. Here’s why: You get a tax deduction when you contribute funds. As of 2018, you can write off up to $3,450 of your contributions if you’re single or $6,900 for family plans. You don’t pay any taxes upon withdrawal as long as you use the money to pay qualified medical expenses or qualified health insurance premiums if you’re over the age of 65. With an IRA, you get one or the other; you get the tax advantages when you contribute or when you withdrawal but not both. With an HSA, you get the tax benefits on both sides. Contribution Limits As of 2018, you can contribute a maximum of $3,450 or $6,900 for families. (The same limits that qualify for a tax deduction.) Like other retirement accounts, these limits adjust based on inflation rates. Once you reach the maximum, redirect contributions to an IRA, 401(k), or another retirement account. Also, just like other retirement accounts, you’re allowed an extra $1,000 in catch up contributions once you reach age 55. Penalty Fees Just like all tax-advantaged retirement accounts, if you use the money for something outside of its purpose, the IRS will hit you with some pretty hefty penalties. Your HSA funds must be used for qualified medical expenses. If you use the money for anything else, you pay ordinary income taxes on the withdrawal plus a 20 percent  penalty. Some quick calculations show that you could pay nearly 50 percent or more in taxes and penalties if you don’t use the money for its intended purpose. Once you reach age 65, things change slightly. You can use the funds for things other than medical expenses but you will only pay ordinary income tax. If you’re in good health or can pay those medical costs out of pocket until you reach your deductible, you can think of it as adding an extra $3,450 or $6,900 to your Roth IRA yearly maximum. That’s a great deal! How It’s Invested Before using your HSA as an investment vehicle, do some investigating. If your employer offers you the HDHP with a health savings account, first ask about the company who will hold the HSA funds. If it’s nothing more than a true savings account, you won’t get much benefit from maxing it out since the money isn’t being invested. Many companies allow you to invest the funds into something more aggressive than a traditional savings account. If your HSA comes with investment options, that’s where the HSA becomes a vehicle for wealth building. Don’t Forget About It Although you’re eligible for an HSA if you’re self-employed, most people get the account through their employer. Just like a 401(k), when you leave your current company, that account is yours to take with you. As long as you remain enrolled in an HDHP you can contribute to your HSA. Don’t forget about your account and collect all the information about it from your human resources department if you’ve had little contact with it in the past. Some Simple Math To show you the power of an HSA, consider this: For the sake of simple math, let’s say that the maximum contribution never went up and you contributed the maximum each year for 20 years and earned a 4 percent  rate of return. We’ll use a very conservative return rate because you will have some years where you have to withdraw some funds for medical expenses. Using these numbers, you would have a balance of more than $113,000 that is completely tax-free if used on qualified medical expenses. As you age your medical expenses will become a larger part of your monthly budget. Having this much money set aside for expenses that could also include long-term care later in life frees up your other retirement funds for things more discretionary. Don’t view your health savings account as something to zero out before the end of each year. This is a valuable tool in your retirement savings arsenal.

3 questions to find the most successful side hustle

3 questions to find the most successful side hustle 3 questions to find the most successful side hustle Every side hustle starts with an idea - and for best results, you may need more than one.Take note of an important fact about hustle ideas: not all of them are created equal. In fact, there’s a tremendous range of potential profit among them.Finding the best approach isn’t always this simple because you’re not always comparing ideas that are so similar. Still, almost every hustle idea that’s worth pursuing shares three qualities. You want your idea to be feasible, profitable, and persuasive.1. Is your idea feasible?Your goal is to start a project in a short period of time that earns money outside of your day job. If any of these pieces of the equation are not immediately evident to the idea you’re considering, you don’t have a feasible idea.Start a project: You’re actually going to do this, not just think about it. When you think about an idea, do you feel excited? Can you envision your next steps? If not, abandon the idea. That earns money: Remember, a side hustle is n ot a hobby. A side hustle produces income. If you don’t see a clear way to get paid, abandon the idea.In a short period of time: If your idea requires three years to get going, abandon the idea.A feasible idea is one that you can turn into reality using the skills, time, and resources you already have. To put it simply, an idea that isn’t feasible is not worth considering. Even if you don’t know every step of the way, you must be able to see a pathway from idea to launch.2. Is your idea profitable? You’re not looking for an idea that merely sounds interesting, you’re looking for a profitable one. To make sure you understand the difference, consider two examples of entirely different ideas. Here’s the first, from a personal chef with a love for high-quality desserts:“I want to start an ice-cream-of-the-month club that delivers artisanal flavors to offices. The service is marketed to HR managers and small business CEOs as a way to increase morale and bring employees toget her for regular social experiences.”In this example, there’s a clear target market. Sure, the logistics of storing and delivering all that ice cream could get a little complicated, but it might be worth exploring if you knew how to source the ingredients and who your initial clients would be. This idea is at least potentially pro table, which is what you want. Now consider another idea, from a college graduate beginning the slow climb at a consulting rm:“I’d like to create an app that introduces a new form of payment for people who don’t like credit cards or cash.”Is that idea interesting? Sure, maybe. But how would you even begin to build and market it? It would be an enormous, expensive undertaking even if you had a background in both information technology and finance. And even if you could easily build it, how would you go about making it stand out from all the other payment apps on the market? At best, it’s a grandiose vision that would re- quire a great deal of de dication and struggle. That’s not what a side hustle is about. Here’s another quick test: if you have a hard time explaining the primary benefit of your concept in more than a sentence or two, you may need to rethink the idea. If the primary benefit is unclear to potential customers, you won’t convert many of them into paying customersA side hustle is something that makes you money, not costs you money. If you don’t see how you could make money from the idea, preferably in a short amount of time, it’s probably not a good idea.3. Is your idea persuasive? There’s one more factor to consider as you brainstorm - and eventually select - your idea. It’s not enough to have a good idea, even one that’s potentially very profitable. Your idea has to arrive at the right time  and be so persuasive that it’s hard for customers to say no to.I recently went to an event where the parking cost $25. Normally it costs $5 to park in this lot, but for the special event, the price had i ncreased 500% overnight. Was I happy about paying $25 for something that usually costs $5? Nope. Did I pay it? Yep. Supply and demand ensured that the parking lot owner was providing a service that was very persuasive on that day.Sometimes you’ll have ideas that are just not ready yet. That’s OK; you can hold on to them for later. Better to focus your current efforts on ideas that are persuasive now. To be successful, you want the right idea at the right time.Adapted from SIDE HUSTLE: FROM IDEA TO INCOME  IN 27 DAYS  Copyright © 2017 by Chris Guillebeau. Why gossip is so seductive (and how to avoid it)

Why gossip is so seductive (and how to avoid it) Why gossip is so seductive (and how to avoid it) Gossip is like the junk food of communication. We know that it is bad and unhealthy, but it’s hard to resist its draw. It is rude and unkind, and of course it’s always terrifying to think that something you said could get back to the person you were gossiping about.Knowing all of its downsides, why is gossip still so hard to resist? The ways gossip brings us togetherGossip Creates Stronger BondsFor many of us, one major reason that gossip feels irresistible is that it was a primary way that we learned to bond with others. Men tend to bond by engaging in a shared activity.  Women  often bond verbally via conversation. Many grow up hearing their parents, grandparents, and other family members talk about one another behind their backs. Gossip, therefore, feels familiar, and any familiar habit is hard to break.Gossip is a Team SportGossip also allows people to feel that they are on the same team against a common “enemy.” Gossip puts you and your conversational partner on one side, and the unlucky person who is being gossiped about on the other side. This increases feelings of connection with a friend, or a potential friend, because both of you bond over looking down on someone else. The social psychology term for this is “in-groupâ€"out-group bias,” where just because you are in a certain group or on a certain side, you start to feel more of an affinity for your own group members, as well as feeling hostility towards members of another group.Gossip Helps Us Express Emotions and Feel Better About OurselvesGossip has another advantage for people who find it difficult to express emotions; you don’t have to be vulnerable with your conversational partners about your own feelings or weaknesses if you direct the conversation toward the topic of other people. For people that find it threatening or feel exposed by going too “deep” in a conversation, gossip is an easy way to avoid looking inward while still carrying on a conversation with a friend.A final sho rt-term benefit of gossip is that is makes you feel better about your own circumstances, especially circumstances that you feel  anxious  or insecure about. Condescending or judging another person’s romantic relationship, for instance, can make you temporarily feel more secure in your own  relationship. You may think, “My boyfriend may be emotionally distant, but at least he is physically faithful to me.” Of course, this doesn’t help your own relationship in the long run, but it can be a quick way to avoid thinking too deeply about issues that make you feel upset. What about the negative aspects of gossip? The downsides to gossiping far outweigh the positives, which most people realize. Gossiping feels like a guilty pleasure at best, and a compulsion at worst. How to Break out of the Gossip CycleIf you want to break the gossip habit, it is important to first think deeply about why you gossip, and which of the above reasons resonates with you most. You need to discover what role gossip plays in your life, both interpersonally (between you and other people; e.g., facilitating bonding when you’re socially anxious) and intrapsychically (within yourself; e.g., making you feel better about issues that you’re insecure about).Replacing Gossip with Healthier BehaviorsOnce you’ve introspected about the function of gossip, you can figure out how to replace gossip with other, healthier behaviors. For example, if you are  insecure about your weight  and therefore recognize that you take any opportunity to gossip about others’ weight gain or style choices, you need to focus more directly on your own body image issues. Therapy can help with this, as well as taking the initiative to choose behaviors that fall more in line with your goals, such as starting to exercise, or meeting with a nutritionist. In terms of bonding, there are many other ways to bond with potential friends, or to deepen your connection with existing friends, besides gossiping. Often, conversati ons can grow a lot more intimate if we focus on sharing our own feelings and insecurities, rather than talking about other people. Friends will empathize or share their own emotions in response, which can deepen a friendship much more than gossiping.Be confident in yourself, and the rest falls into placeSpending too much time gossiping is a sign that you may need to examine your life more closely. Becoming more confident in yourself and your choices will allow you to feel stronger and to live a more authentic life. When you are happier with yourself, you may find that gossip seems much less appealing, and it can become a lot easier to be kind and nonjudgmental of others. This article first appeared on Talkspace.

Hard Won Staffing Lessons and Where We Go from Here

Hard Won Staffing Lessons and Where We Go from Here Hard Won Staffing Lessons and Where We Go from Here Hard Won Staffing Lessons and Where We Go from Here Although staffing employment traditionally is a leading indicator of recovery, professional recruiters today look forward with caution. This recession feels different not just a slowdown, but a disruption of the way business has been done. As you formulate a strategic plan, ask yourself: Can I afford a return to business-as-usual? spoke to leaders in staffing whose hard-won wisdom points to a better future. Staffing Solutions that Innovate Dan Boersma of Laguna Source in Laguna Beach, CA specializes in finding talent for pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device makers. Hes managed the downturn with a three-part strategy of client service, industry knowledge and old-fashioned hustle. In this recession, youre working twice as hard to make three quarters as much money, Dan asserts. The big positive is you have a little bit of free time, to say, Hey, we have some time on our hands, what can we do thats going to help us long-term? Talent shortages in his niche have helped, but as even successful companies try to do more with less, Dan finds he has to narrow his focus to develop deeper relationships with clients. This is the time to listen, to learn more about coming technologies and the skills needed to harness them, and to build trust. Dan and his team watch for announcements on venture funding and company earnings that signal staffing opportunities. Press releases and news articles are obvious conversation-starters with potential clients. Less obvious is Dans observation that his best currently-employed candidates are more reluctant to move to a new employer. They need reassurance that a medical technology firm, for example, will have staying power. Whether positive or negative, industry developments point to hidden corners where top talent and new prospects on both sides of the recruitment equation are open to change. Dan says, If a companys doing layoffs, I want to be the first to talk to their people. And then theres plain old bearing down in tough times. In a downturn, recruiters tend to get down on themselves and the business, Dan says. Its easy to blame things on a bad economy, but we get here early, stay late, work on weekendsstaying aggressive like this has just kept us going. Service, research, and hard work deliver. Its a simple plan, and it works for Laguna Source. Rethinking Staffing Services Margaret (Margo) Graziano of KeenHire in San Jose is taking the reinvention route; she believes that the fundamentals of staffing have shifted, and the future belongs to those who broaden their services. Margo has moved her Talent Management Division from getting people into chairs to a form of human capital management consulting. KeenHires clients, also caught in the disruptions of the Great Recession, face many hiring complications that boil down to doing more with less. They profit from expertise shes developed across the entire talent acquisition timeline, such as: Risk Mitigation Clients are asking us to help them not hire the wrong people, because they cant afford to make mistakes, says Margo. Staffing cant just supply candidates and hope it works out (or blame a bad hire on a clients managers). Risk mitigation means helping a client design teams. Whats the right mix of talents for a new initiative or product? How should the team work? Can the company adapt, and how? It also means retention. We see a lot more effort and money being spent on keeping the good people, observes Margo. Hiring Improvements Job descriptions can be a vise, squeezing the wrong person into a job because she happens to have the right skills. Margo counters this problem by assessing people well beyond skills. I look carefully at the people who are already doing well in the job and build what we call a DNA thumbprint of what the ideal candidate looks like not their resume but their values, beliefs, competencies and behaviors. We actually find and staff organizational development professionals, industrial psychologists, training and development people, HR, talent management people, talent acquisition, full-time and contract recruiters. Human Resource Management Human capital consulting from staffing companies can add value to processes like onboarding, top-grading and retention strategies. Once the staffing company has supplied great talent, it can help the client hold onto those people. This is more service, and while it reduces churn (and lets admit it here churn can make short-term profits for staffing companies) it deepens customer attachment and creates new services to sell. It goes beyond the hiring moment, Margo concludes. We work with companies to help them develop coaching programs and training and development programs for their high potential people. Where Staffing Goes from Here As you plan ahead, consider these likelihoods: 1) Staffing will see a resurgence but not a return to business as usual. The collapse of whole business areas and re-alignment of money (think automotive and health care, for two examples) means that client needs will change. 2) The super-candidate syndrome will continue. Margo Graziano suggests that staffing lead the conversation away from Super Resume to Super Candidate by finding greater alignment in values and capabilities than single skills. 3) There is no substitute for persistence and hard work, especially with your most creative employees. Open your business to their suggestions. Experiment. Be aggressive. Learn and change. Great practitioners of staffing recognize a tectonic shift brought by such a brutal recession. Companies big and small will have to do more with less. Even as business picks up, the opportunity to lead change for your clients and your business is too exciting to miss.

How Sexism Has (and Hasnt) Changed Since 1995 - The Muse

How Sexism Has (and Hasnt) Changed Since 1995 - The Muse How Sexism Has (and Hasnt) Changed Since 1995 Kate White ended her 1995 book, Why Good Girls Don’t Get Ahead But Gutsy Girls Do: 9 Secrets Every Working Woman Must Know, with an optimistic statement: “Though I know my publisher wouldn’t like this, I hope this book is totally obsolete by the time my daughter launches into her career.” Her daughter was five then. More than two decades later, that little girl is in her 20s and the state of affairs for women in the workplace has certainly changed. But it’s safe to say that gender bias isn’t obsolete and neither, therefore, is advice geared toward women trying to get ahead in their careers. That’s why White decided to update her book for a younger audience. The Gutsy Girl Handbook: Your Manifesto for Success hit the shelves in April 2018. “The important thing is that it’s still relevant,” says White, who explains that “in many ways I didn’t change much of it.” The principles at the core of her gutsy girl approach haven’t fundamentally changed in the last 23 years, but there’s a reason she felt it was time to rewrite her guide. For one thing, though the obstacles and sexism women face in the office have hardly disappeared, the bias has mostly shape-shifted into variations that are harder to detect. “The bias against us was more obvious sometimes,” back when White was writing her original book. At the time, she recalls, “women had really only been pouring into the workforce for like 15 or 20 years,” and “there was still this sense that there are growing opportunities but there’s not a lot to go around yet.” There was such a dearth of female leaders as role models in the early 1990s, White says, that people were still invoking the historical and fictional likes of Eleanor Roosevelt and Nancy Drew- “they carried a lot of weight.” Redbook, a magazine for women that White led when her 1995 book came out, only got its first female editor-in-chief in 1981. In the late 1980s, White had sexism slap her in the face, hard. She lost out on a job and a male colleague later told her explicitly that her proposal had been the best one, but she’d been passed over for the position because she was a woman. It was one of the reasons she’d gone back to women’s magazines, and perhaps part of the impetus for her transformation from good to gutsy. In those days, “you didn’t even flinch” at such blatant discrimination because it was so commonplace, she says. “Now it isn’t as obvious, because there are so many opportunities and the part of the pie for us is bigger,” she explains. That’s a good thing, but it can also “make you less aware of ways that there is bias against you,” she adds. “It’s really important to understand that those things are still at play.” White, who went on to be editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan from 1998 to 2012, recalls such a situation she encountered right before she left that magazine. A new guy in a digital role there had to cancel a big meeting that involved busy people across departments at Hearst as well as the president of the magazine division. Upon rescheduling, he suggested a 7 AM time, to which the boss agreed. “These two guys have stay-at-home wives,” White says, but “this is a company filled with working moms,” where people generally started at 9 AM after dealing with home and family obligations. “That’s the kind of thing that struck me- someone’s not taking that into consideration,” she says, referring to today’s bias as “lots of little paper cuts.” Two decades later, the sexism is subtler, and so are the changes White thinks women need to make. Where she once saw cause for major overhauls, she now argues the case for nuanced tweaks. “I think when I wrote the original book, many women would have said that going from good to gutsy involved making pretty significant changes in how they approached work situations,” she says. “Today so many young women take a gutsier approach (though not all; I hear many women talk about worrying too much about being nice),” she adds. “But I still think many confident, together young women can benefit from tweaking their behavior, kicking things up a notch. Little, sometimes subtle moves can make a big difference.” She gives three examples of what those tweaks might look like: stop qualifying your ideas, keep negotiating, and speak up in times of crisis. That means you should cut out phrases such as “I’m just spit balling here” or “Maybe we could…” and “I still have to do more research on this but…” when sharing ideas. It means you shouldn’t shy away from negotiating “out of fear of rocking the boat,” even when an offer is “good enough,” and instead say something like, “I’d love to work here but I was hoping for X amount.” And it means that instead of going quiet, overanalyzing, and hunkering down “when shit hits the fan,” women should “move faster, fight for resources, and make decisions earlier than you may be comfortable with.” White is thrilled to see that “Millennial women are so wonderfully gutsy and confident, which I admire fiercely about them.” But the tweaks she’s talking about are a reminder that “part of being gutsy is being strategic.” She’s had a slew of young women report to her and her advice is not only to go for it, but also to ask yourself what the best way to play the situation is. In most cases, that means avoiding framing an ask in terms of why it would be good for you, and talking instead about how it would benefit your boss, department, company, or professional contact. “Women in the ’90s didn’t expect a lot,” she says. Those pursuing careers today “assume things will happen for them, which may make them sometimes unaware of how gutsy and strategic  they still need to be.” In other words, White no longer has to work as hard to convince women they should be a little gutsier. But she’s still trying to show them what that should look like.

Tips to Start a Viable Post-Military Career for Returning Vets

Tips to Start a Viable Post-Military Career for Returning Vets Tips to Start a Viable Post-Military Career for Returning Vets As the Department of Defense continues its drawdown of American military personnel after decades of major troop deployment, tens of thousands of American troops are preparing to transition out of the military and back into civilian life. The transition will be easier for some than others; but with a solid plan and access to helpful resources, returning heroes can find success and satisfaction in a post-military career. “Military service members learn important on-the-job skills that make them valuable civilian employees,” says University of Phoenix Military Relations Vice President, retired Army Col. Garland Williams. “Knowing how to market those skills correctly helps ensure a smooth transition into a rewarding job after military service is complete.” Despite mastering in-demand skills, hurdles often remain. According to a  University of Phoenix survey, when past service members were asked about their first civilian job after separation from the military, less than one-third (29 percent) say that they used their military skills to that extent in the civilian workplace. This suggests that while the veteran unemployment rate continues to decline, many veterans may actually be underemployed. To help transitioning service members maximize the career resources available to not just get a job, but start a viable post-military career, Col. Williams recommends tips to help service members get started: 1. Start early and get connected.  Begin the transition process as early as possible. Talk to peers who made transitions and network with as many people as possible to learn about employers who are hiring and who could benefit from your skills. Create a profile on professional networking sites to keep in touch with professional contacts and learn about possible career opportunities. Conduct informational interviews with veterans who are working with companies that appeal to you. 2. Research your education and career options. Use free online tools to investigate degree programs and possible career paths. The Phoenix Career Guidance System can help you research a degree program based on your interests, skills and experience, and provides insight on local job market trends and industry demands. Also, the  Military Skills Translator Tool  takes your Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) code and suggests a list of related civilian occupations. 3. Brush up on your job-searching skills.  Visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s  Transitional Assistance Program (TAP), which provides soon-to-be discharged or retired service members helpful information and workshops on job searching, resume and cover letter writing, interviewing techniques and career decision-making. Look for veteran hiring fairs and local hiring events that are taking place across the country. Each year, there are hundreds of  Hiring Our Heroes  veteran events that help transitioning service members, veterans and their families find viable career options. 4. Speak the language.  Communicate military experience and training to hiring employers with words, not acronyms, which may not translate on a resume. Promote skills such as leadership, management, cooperation, teamwork and strategic thinking. Mention these attributes in the cover letter and resume alongside all technical skills. Give your prospective employer specific examples of how you utilized these skills in your various assignments during your military tenure and how they will translate to the job for which youre being interviewed. 5. Don’t sell yourself short.  While job searching, remember the valuable skills you learned in the military can make a real difference for employers. Identify a mentor â€" preferably someone with a military background who has transitioned successfully and can help guide the job search process and remind you of your strengths and transferable skills. “Service members have a wealth of resources available to them, but knowing where and how to start the transitioning process can be overwhelming,” says Col. Williams. “However, it’s similar to being in the military â€" developing a plan of attack can set these jobseekers on a path to future career success.”
