Don't Bring me the Problem, Bring me the Solution My best boss and mentor declared this whenever someone tried to pass a problem to him; he would have nothing of it.He was different from many of his peers who felt obligated to be the problem solver and therefore âforceâ his direct reports to depend on him.As a direct report, I wanted to learn about the business and solving problems was THE best way to do it. Having my boss provide all the answers didnât help teach me the business and it certainly didnât enable me to grow.This was his approach:1. He would insist that our problem discussion was focused on the SOLUTION I thought would work.2. He insisted that I identify a number of potential options with pros and cons of each.3. He expected I did my homework in terms of the CUSTOMER VALUE each option would create. This was the number one criteria he used to judge the ranking of the options I presented.4. He probed each option; asked me tons of questions; took a copious amount of notes.5. He asked me to consider our discussion f or 24 hours before deciding on the solution I thought was best.6. He directed me to advise him of the direction I was taking.7. I was held accountable for the impact of my decision. I had to report back to him in 30-60 days on the results.That was it. I defined the problem; outlined a range of potential solutions with the pros and cons of each; he added value through his questions; I made the call and was held accountable.I learned, felt respected; developed leadership skills and mentored others on the same approach.

Art and fear - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Chris Corrigan links to a review of the book Art Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking, from which comes the following quote: The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two groups. All those on the left side of the studio, he said, would be graded solely on the quantity of work they produced, all those on the right solely on its quality. His procedure was simple: on the final day of class he would bring in his bathroom scales and weigh the work of the quantity group: fifty pound of pots rated an A, forty pounds a B, and so on. Those being graded on quality, however, needed to produce only one pot -albeit a perfect one to get an A. Well, came grading time and a curious fact emerged: the works of highest quality were all produced by the group being graded for quantity. It seems that while the quantity group was busily churning out piles of work and learning from their mistakes the quality group had sat theorizing about perfection, and in the end had little more to show for their efforts than grandiose theories and a pile of dead clay. Hehehe, I looooove that. And heres another thought: I think art and work are approaching each other, or rather, I think that the way we work is coming more and more to resemble the way we produce art. Work used to be about producing something, and of course it still is, but increasingly work is also about self-expression and creating meaning for yourself and others, as in art. Why People Come to Work Sick âIf youâre sick, stay home.â Youâve heard that from experts ranging from the CDC, to WebMD, to your own mother. If youâre lucky, you might even hear it from your boss. Still, many come to work sick, including over half of food service workers. The phenomenon is called âpresenteeism,â and researchers estimate that it costs employers $150 billion a year â" more than either absenteeism or disability. So why do people go to work when theyâre sick? The reason why is pretty obvious: American workers feel they canât take time off, and a lot of the time, theyâre right. Not Everyone Has Sick Time Some cities and states have mandated paid sick leave, but thereâs no federal law requiring employers to pay workers for time off due to illness. While federal employees and those working for companies with government contracts can earn up to seven paid sick days annually, only 61 percent of workers in the private sector have paid sick leave, according to 2015 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Lower-paid workers are most likely to do without; 78 percent of workers making $9 an hour or less have no paid sick time. Workers Receive Messages That They Shouldnât Use the Time They Have Researchers at the University of East Anglia tried to determine why employees come to work when theyâre sick, by reviewing data from 61 studies involving 175,960 participants in 34 countries. âThe study found that job demands, including heavy workload, understaffing, time pressures and financial difficulties, were a significant reason people stuck it out in the office,â writes Kate Bratskeir at The Huffington Post. âOn the other hand, workers will take a sick day when they have supportive colleagues and a positive relationship with managers.â Managers and companies donât necessarily have to say that theyâd prefer workers not to take their available sick days, in order to discourage their reports from being out. Take, for instance, stories about employers who require a doctorâs note for workers who are out sick for a day or two. (Perfectly legal, by the way, although a tremendous waste of everyoneâs time and resources.) Then, thereâs corporate culture. If you work at a place that lionizes workers who sleep under their desk and answer emails at 3 in the morning, youâre probably not going to feel OK about staying home with a cold. In an economic environment like that, itâs no wonder if workers are scared to do anything that might annoy the boss â" even if the boss is likely to be more annoyed later on by the fact that the whole team is now down with the flu because no one will stay home. Itâs easy to say, âstay home when youâre sick,â but if we donât address the underlying issues that lead people to come to work when theyâre unwell, nothing will change. To make the modern workplace safe for sick days, we need to advocate for paid sick time for all workers, and in the meantime, do what we can to facilitate change at our workplaces. If youâre a manager, this means taking your own sick time when you need it, and making sure people know youâre doing it. If youâre an employee, this means taking care of yourself by eating well, getting a flu shot, washing your hands, and so on, and â" if you feel safe doing so â" taking your own time off when youâre ill. And, no matter where you stand on the corporate ladder, maybe itâs time to think about whether todayâs 24/7/365 mentality leads to real productivity (it doesnât), or just face-time from workers whoâd be better at their jobs if they were allowed to take care of themselves.
